African American hair grows just like any other hair. But because African American hair is highly textured it is drier and more delicate than other types of hair. As a result it breaks more easily than other types of hair. This gives the false impression that it does not grow. To keep the hair on your head from breaking off using gentle hair care techniques and gentle hair care products and you will notice your hair growth. Avoid brushing, tight braids, tight curlers, flat ironing every day, relaxers (which cause unecessary breakage in most people who get them), etc. Use products made with natural vegetable oils. Avoid mineral oil and petrolatum in your hair care products.

my friend put micro weaves in her hair and it grew longer. her hair used to be so short. trims every 3 months also help.

I'm not african-american, but I do know that black women with long hair have extensions (is that how it's spelled?). African-american people's hair is too dry to grow long, so they always use extensions or wigs.
